Exactly what millionaire athletes are protesting these days isn’t exactly clear to them or anyone else. The common thread appears to be some anti-American/police sentiment. America is racist? Police are racist?
Whatever it is millions of Americans have had enough as evidenced by the ongoing NFL ratings spiral.
Has a once-dominant professional sports franchise ever committed suicide?
It looks like we may be about to find out.
Excerpt via DEADLINE:
In metered market numbers, the primetime match-up between the 27-10 winning Washington Redskins and the Oakland Raiders snared an 11.6/20.
The worst SNF has performed this season so far, that’s an 8% dip from the early numbers of last week’s Atlanta Falcon’s 34-23 win over the Green Bay Packers. Gaining cheers and boos from fans at FedEx Field in Maryland last night, the third week of SNF for the 2017-2018 season declined 10% from early numbers of the comparable game last year.
That final NBC viewership number was down 17% from the official SNF kickoff on September 10.
A 17% decline is HUGE, representing many millions of dollars in lost revenue to the networks, the NFL, team owners, and ultimately, the millionaire athletes who play the game.
The NFL penalizes and fines players for celebrations in the endzone, taunting, arguing with officials, illegal hits, etc., and yet has actually promoted the anti-flag/anti-America protests by a number of its players.
Seems the league’s priorities are a bit out of whack. Until the NFL realizes this those ratings will continue to decline.
