President Obama walked calmly to the podium at the White House Rose Garden, lifted his chin upward in that by now all too familiar pose, and proceeded to admonish any and all who would stage opposition to his choice to replace historic Supreme Court Justice conservative, Antonia Scalia.
That choice is Merrick Garland, a man with left of center rulings, but who is in fact, far left when it comes to the 2nd Amendment rights of gun owners in America and that and that alone, is why he has been chosen by Barack Obama to try and tilt the Supreme Court firmly away from the concept of gun rights in this country.
ABOVE: Merrick Garland is not being put forward to be nominated in 2016, but rather to be Hillary Clinton’s first choice should she be sworn in as President in 2017.
Mr. Obama gave his sing-song declarations of how Mr. Garland is “uniquely qualified” to sit on the nation’s highest court. He criticized the strained politics of today, and declared such politics should not keep a man so deserving as Merrick Garland from joining the High Court.
What Barack Obama did not include in his Rose Garden sermon, is Judge Garland’s troubling and very much anti-Scalia views regarding private gun rights. In fact, gun rights advocacy groups are already sounding the warning that Garland is a clear and present threat to the important D.C. vs. Heller Supreme Court ruling (advocated by Justice Scalia) that strongly asserted “…an individual right to keep and bear arms” in America.
During his time on the D.C. Circuit Court, Judge Heller was among those who wanted what became D.C. vs Heller to be challenged by federal law. In essence, he was indicating favor in maintaining an outright ban on handguns.
The Supreme Court ruling, led by Scalia, swatted away the judicial activism of judges like Heller and forcefully reinforced the foundational premise of the Second Amendment.
Now, just weeks after Justice Scalia’s sudden death, Barack Obama is attempting to push a judge who was among those who acted in opposition to Scalia’s always determined and resolute defense of private gun rights.
It is now up to Establishment Republicans in the Senate to hold the line and now allow Judge Garland to be considered as a replacement for Justice Scalia.
Then it is up to the American voters to not allow Hillary Clinton that same attempt in 2017.
