Congressman Jim Jordan played a pivotal role in not only pushing out current House Speaker John Boehner, but Boehner’s own hoped-for successor, Congressman Kevin McCarthy which included a reported confrontation in which Jordan pointed to McCarthy and declared, “You will never be Speaker. NEVER.” See that story: HERE
With establishment Republicans hoping to cling to some semblance of their former power, they have pushed Congressman Paul Ryan to reconsider his earlier declaration he would not seek the Speakership. With a reported meeting between Ryan and Jordan having just taken place, has an alliance between the two Republican factions been struck?
(Above: Congressman Jim Jordan declared to the media yesterday he, “Wants a Speaker who is willing to fight…Republicans have betrayed voters.” Congressman Paul Ryan has apparently indicated to some fellow House Republicans he is willing to consider running for Speaker. The question now is if Jim Jordan and his Freedom Caucus Republicans are convinced Ryan has the willingness to do the thing they want most from the next Speaker of the House – fight for conservative principles.)
The outcome of the Jordan-Ryan meeting remains unknown with staff from both offices keeping tight-lipped.
What is certain is that if Paul Ryan publicly declares himself willing to run for Speaker, he will do so having first secured the support of Ryan and the Freedom Caucus. It is a proof of a significant shift from withing the Republican Party that has the establishment reeling from the focused power and influence of Republicans openly sick and tired of being a party that seemingly stands for nothing more than allowing Democrats to continue to expand their own Big Government, anti-freedom agenda.
Presently, though Paul Ryan has his critics among Freedom Caucus members, he is also considered a far superior choice to the business and usual/Boehner-approved offering that was Congressman Kevin McCarthy. That said, there remains a strong possibility Freedom Caucus members, including Congressman Jordan, will let it be known Paul Ryan is not an acceptable choice. That message might have been delivered to Ryan personally this morning.
Conservative Republicans are flexing their muscle and while the establishment may not like it, it also has no choice but to work with it and that is scenario that, despite the current political chaos, could prove very beneficial to Americans desperate for a change regarding the direction of the federal government.
That fact will determine Paul Ryan’s decision to run for House Speaker – or not.
